King of the Jews
The Magi called Jesus, ‘King of the Jews,’ the same title that hung over his head while he was crucified. You can’t see the manger without looking beyond to the cross.
This title for Jesus bookends the gospel of Matthew because it remind us of Jesus’ mission. He came to save his people from their sins and become Lord of their lives and reign in their hearts as King (see Matthew 2:2; 27:11, 37; 1:17, 21).
